“Why’s he so fucking rude?” Maddox cried, flopping down onto the king-sized bed in Kailee and Kingsley’s room. “Is that how all agents are? Super fucking serious and unable to enjoy one second of their life?”

“No,” Kailee replied, perching on the edge of the bed while Kingsley began unpacking his bag. “He’s obviously worried about you. He wants to put you in the hotel room and keep you there like Rapunzel. No one can harm you again if you’re locked up.”

“He’s worried about the mission being messed up,” Maddox countered, staring at the ceiling.

“Wrong again.” Kailee pushed at him so he’d make room for her.

He sat up and scooted over, and she lounged next to him.

“Do you think he doesn’t trust me?” Maddox asked, wondering aloud.

Kailee sighed. “No. I think he cares about you and doesn’t want you getting hurt again. How many times do we have to say it?”

Maddox ignored her words because he was already heading down an ugly rabbit hole of worry. “He thinks I will go out there and blab all about the mission. Or maybe he thinks I’m actually a sleeper agent, like you were, Kingsley. And that I’m going to head to Dinges and Widmer and tell them everything.”

Kingsley looked back at him, shaking his head. “I don’t know why you’re letting your anxiety run away like this.”

“Yeah,” Kailee agreed. “That came out of nowhere. You’ve never expressed being worried about being a sleeper agent.”

Kingsley added, “Not since your SPLOOGE.”

Kailee and Maddox both snapped their heads toward Kingsley, crying, “What?”

“The Sleeper Programming Observation, Offsetting, and Gross Exorcism,” Kingsley answered. “You did the SPOOGE. We all do the SPOOGE. The new ones will have to do the SPOOGE just like the rest of us. It’s the only way we can take in these experiments and know they aren’t waiting to fuck FUC over.”

Maddox and Kailee continued to stare at him.

“SPOOGE is the program I helped FUCN’A develop after my incident.”

Kingsley had sleeper-agent mind control done to him by Dinges and Widmer. A knock to his head had brought him out of it, but he had to work with FUC scientists and shifter neurosurgeons to help develop the FUC sleeper-agent protocol.

“I understand your worry,” Kingsley said, leaning against the desk. “But I swear, I’ve seen all the science behind the SPOOGE mind mapping, and I trust it. It works.”

The reassurance was lost on Maddox, who was still hung up on the acronym. “Gross exorcism?”

“Yeah. Like total removal.” Kingsley shrugged.

“Why don’t they just say that?” Kailee asked.

“Because Sleeper Programming Observation, Offsetting, and Total Removal would have been SPOOTR.”

“And that’s a problem because…” Maddox threw his hands out toward Kingsley to prompt him to explain.

“Oh, they already have a SPOOTR. Shifter Participation On Odd Trials and Roistering.”

“What the fuck does that mean?”

“I don’t know. Not my department.” Kingsley shrugged. “Anyway, I know the feeling of living and feeling like there’s another shoe that’s going to drop.”

“Like the physical monstrosity they’ve turned me into isn’t the only thing I’ve come out of this with,” Maddox finished.
